I want to take my smokers, my 10X10 tent, BBQ Team banner, and wife/kids and plop everything in the middle of "student tailgate central" during a few home football games. Not small college...a Big 12 school. I know I can't sell the BBQ, so I'd give it away with a "suggested donation". The HD isn't an issue...I know that for sure and the University told me it was fine as long as I wasn't selling anything. I was thinking pork sammies and beans. Anyone do anything like this? I'm thinking of the student lot because it will be the most populated and most hungry Laughing . I know they wouldn't have the fattest wallets and I know I will give away many sammies without a donation...figure that's part of it. Any suggestions?

Forgot to mention that I would be giving a small percentage to our local youth hockey association...so not all of it is a donation to me Laughing

If you are asking for a 'donation' and to college kids to boot (everyone knows they are the brokest people alive..almost), good luck.

I would be supprised if you walked away with enough to pay your gas much less anything else.

If you were to do something like this...it would be better to hook up with some other parents so they can at least share in the costs.

Yeah..I know they are pretty much broke. But, when I was in college I would at least save my money for the weekends. As far as cost, I was thinking 10 Butts, Beans, Sauce, Utensils...maybe putting $300-350 into the thing and when it's gone, it's gone. To define it as a "success", I'd be looking to clear $800. Unrealistic? For some reason, maybe inexperience alone Laughing , I don't think so. I have, however, been wrong before Wink

Has the school approved the "suggested donation" part?

I also agree with Marv- I don't see this as a money-maker for you.

You may however be able to break even, and promote your BBQ service. If that is the idea, then give it a try...................

I think if that idea was tried. (I like it) you would might be using that event as a charity write-off come 2008 tax season.

I could go very well, but could go exactly the opposite direction too.

What is the fraternity situation like for your area? Spending $300-$350 to pick up a party or two down the road and get some excellent photo ops. might be a worthwhile gamble if you have that type of thing planned for your future. I bet your competition banner cost more then you plan on spending on this anyways.

I would never try anything like that becuase I cannot stand college towns and the rich kids living off daddy's dime being smarmy little pukes. But on the other hand, there is usually some good scenery wandering around, you may need a set of blinders to keep your eyes on task.

Don't forget Harry, those kids are the one's that will grow up and actually be able to afford your services! Wink

That's not to say that I don't have a lot of "average Joe's" as clients (and they usually tip the best too!), but let's face it, this is a luxury service..........

Actually, promotion was part of the idea. Lots of Frats and other opportunities with the university. If I broke even, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world as I planned to pass out business cards. My math tells me I'd break even with an average donation of $2...so I don't know. Yeah, plenty of scenery too and it IS tailgating after all. At the time being, can't quit my regular job to cater/cook full time, so I'm just kind of feeling my way around. Planning on a Stumps Elite 6 or 8 over the winter. If I go through with the Tailgate Test, I'll keep you posted on how it went.

Get the biggest unit you can afford!!!

You may grow into it, Or outgrow it if you are lucky.

Gzo over to stumps forum and see the chatter on the elites, I am glad I got a legacy and added a stoker. The price was unbeatable.

But I got my eyes set on the GF hog-cooker to add to the line-up.

I helped out with something like this a couple years ago at a game here. We did it with the fire department cost upfront for meat, bread, napkins sauces and such was about 600. Can't remember the amout of meat we got. We took donations of about 3 or so a sandwich and raised about 2800. We found quite a few people tossed more than a requested donation due to it going to the FD.

1. I don't have the proper license...yet.
2. The University won't let me (taking away from concessions).
3. The whole tax thing.
4. I'm sure I'm forgetting some things...
