See...this is what I'm talking about. You have it down so well, that you may not be acting like one.

Telling people they are copping out, cheaters and childish. Then saying to grow up. The only people I know that continue to say such things are between 15 and 25 years old. Is that you or are you the old guy that equates growing up with being as stubborn and judgemental as you are?

Ah, little clearer about the details, since we don't know from him, found an old (2 months) post from our Author.

Seems the ROOKIE, just posted this on 6/6: I say rookie, only to quote the title of the post "Cooking on a WSM for rookies"

Title: WSM Rookie
[quote="bluesman250"]
Hello all. I just bought a WSM cooker, and will be using it for the first time this weekend. While i have been BBQing for years, I have never used a WSM before. Are there any tips or suggestions you could give me? any thing would be appreciated. Thanks very much![quote]

Now he's progressed to deciding who is and isn't a pit master.

You know even less about your WSM (2 months now?) than I do about my FE (oh, about 4 to 5 years now).

Don't go away mad, just hang around, make for some good reading, and let's discuss the facts.

As Sgt Webb used to say:

It's our new mascot. I don't think we can take them to a comp that has an "anything butt" category. Wink

Here's a link if you'd like to start forming a valid opinion about their plight. Cool

It has taken a while to respond but this has made for some of the best reading ever on the ring.

First off, I use to think as some do that the pellet smokers should not be allowed but were "glorified ovens" as some say. Then, as I gained experience and got educated about bbq and pellet smokers I realized that they were so much more than that.

As I wandered around the PGA this weekend I considered something that got me thinking about this thread. After watching Tiger Woods play and everyone else I can tell you that it doesn't matter what equipment you put in some of the other players hands, they still can't beat someone with superior talent.

Several of posts say it, it is as much about the cook as it is the cooker. I have had several different types of smokers over the past 12 years and I can tell you that it wouldn't have mattered one bit how good the smoker was in the beginning because my q would still be crappy.

Now that I have more experience, I can cook quality stuff on just about anything as long as I get time to get use to the cooker.

I belive the cooker is important but never can overcome the importance cook and what we bring to the table with recipies, rubs, wood flavors, sauces etc.

The rules are what they are. If someone feels they can have an advantage by using a pellet smoker then save your pennies and go buy one and kick everyones butt.

Until then, respect the fact that it takes just as much skill to cook on a pellet as a stick burner. Each are just different.

Quit making excuses for losing to pellets. Get better prepared. Practice more. Do the work to get better.

Karl

As an owner of 2 weber kettles, 1 wsm, 1 chargriller w/sfb and a Grand Hall gasser, I decided to go do some research on the Treager. It is an all wood cooker that uses the element to ignite the wood pellets, all wood pellets. The wood is used to control the heat , not the element.
I was so impressed with what I read, I'm going to buy one. ( The boss said it would be ok after the first of the year.) Very Happy
As far as the human element, I know my cookers so well now that I will leave them for several hours and not worry.
As far as the food, it's the cook not the cooker. Part of the cooking process is knowing your equipment. Only bad cooks blame the equipment.
As far as comps., I don't participate so I'll stay out of that one.
The only prize that I ever need is the smiles of my family and friends after they eat what I have cooked. Smile
Now, everyone just go have a beer and let the flames just burn themselves out.

Take care,
Brian

Brian:

I have used a couple different Treager smokers that have been provided to my team to use by in competition by the local dealership and I would recomend the Big Tex as a very good unit to look at. The little tex, which I have used as well just does not have enough room. I have also used the smoker that looks like a steer but prefer the Big Tex as it does seem to work better for some reason. Also, you will want to get the digital thermometer and save yourself some frustration.

Appreciate the input Roxy. The Big Tex was the one that I was looking at. Does it fit about the same as the chargriller or a little less?
Thanks, Brian

Well said Karl! And Brian, you'll end up loving the Treager, I know, I've had 2 of them. Started with the Lil Tex, quickly outgrew it and traded up to the Big Texas this spring.

Blues,

You really got a good one started, and I really think you accomplished what you started out to do. Try and get a good fight going. During this thread you have wondered in several different directions when talking about things you didn't like.

*Pellet cookers, just set it and forget it. Sounds like they are being built by Ron Popeel. Any cooker takes skill to get the most out of it's abilities. Garbage in garbage out??

*Then you talk about pellet cookers using FAB and other ingredients that you dislike. I have never used the product, but you have used a broad brush in your discriptions. So now I must be guilty in your mind. Many people have made comments about your statments, which you then ignore or reffer to as whining. Good way to win an arguement.

*You also said any type of device which uses electricity or battery should be banned. Temp guages, Gurus, remote probes, blowers for fire boxes. Ohh, and rotisseries. I guess we should all take it a little easier on you. You don't just dislike pellet cookers. There really is a very large group of people you don't like.

*What type of cookers would you allow? Should charcoal be allowed. It's not traditional, unless its lump? I guess you would have to allow charcoal, that's what your using I guess.

I've been doing Q for over 27 years. Some made a comment earlier that many of the pellet users had started with a stick burner. And that's true for me. I used a couple of gas cookers, then a charcoal cooker then a Kingsfisher, stick burner. And now two FEC's. I've only done a couple of comps, but doing two more this fall.

It's the cook, not the cooker. That must just be too hard to understand.

The grill space is narrower but longer but I think pretty darned close. Maybe a little less as I have cooked 3 - 10 lb briskets on the chargriller and I dont think you could fit that on a Big Tex.. I have only had a brisket and a butt at one time on the cooker.

On the Treager 075 which is what you are referring to I believe, we routinely cook two 10 lb briskets and two 8 to 9 pound butts on it at comps.

Maybe. Talked about OKC and also one in Fayetteville, AR. Not 100% sure.

We did get the new rig wrapped with our graphics pictures. If I thought I could post a pic I would but that is asking a lot out of the small techno side of my brain.

Are you cooking anywhere before then?

OKC, then Pine Bluff the week after, Ponca the week after that. 1 week off, the Royal, then Jenks. After Jenks....hopefully somewhere around Lynchburg Wink We'll find out in about 3 weeks.

That OKC contest is a pretty good one for a new contest, if you can swing it I think it would be worth it. I figure you gotta put a few miles on that new rig. Wink

Thanks Roxy and Dab. I found a couple of places here in Dayton that sell them. I'm going to check them out this weekend.
Thanks,
