Does anybody use a handheld blower (fan) to stoke the firebox embers and encourage a new log to take off? If so, what model fan... and where did you get it?

Do you have an air compressor? I used to use an old long-necked blow gun with the rubber tip removed. Had to be sure to dial down the hose pressure to >10psi and be careful not to drop it down into the ashes. I then made one by attaching a 48" length of 1/4" black pipe on the end of a ball valve with 1/4" male quick connect on the other end of the valve. Either way, you will be able to precisely place enough air to quickly fan the coals into a furious frenzy.

I use a old computer fan, one of those 3 inch ones. secured to a piece of 3" Pvc pipe, been using it for years, works great I put on a lawn chair about one inch from the side vent on my Lang. The PVC is about 18 inches long.

I use a heat gun to start the fire.
I used a cheap Harbor Freight plastic heat gun for years until I melted it in our weber.

Now I got Looftlighter for me Bday . it works great.

Thanks, guys, for all info. Eventhough I have electricity near my smoker, it still requires an ext cord. I'm trying to avoid the inconvenience & the trip hazard. Haven't made decision yet, but will reply when I do. Thanks, again.

If you are having an issue maintaining temp when adding logs, you may want to try pre heating your logs on top of the firebox and let them get hot before adding them to your coal base. The pre heated logs will usually catch instantly. Its also important to have a good coal base to start with.
If your issue is with building the initial fire, I would suggest using a weed burner.
This is what I use....
