I'm getting ready to start a RF, and I'm planning on making the FB from 3/8 mostly because I already have it. My question is if I do corner to corner joints will I be able to do one pass? I've been welding mostly as a hobby sometimes side job for 10-12 years. I usually don't weld anything over 1/4. I've done a few multi pass welds before and I don't particularly care for it, to repetitive. I'd prefer to mig weld it, I've only learned stick in the last few years and I'm far from an expert on it. And my welders are capable of a single pass, I've got a 250 amp mig and a 300 amp stick.

Thanks, Kyle

You have to consider heat and warpage on end
to end single pass on that thick a metal...

Welding corner to corner with the mig I would still do a fill and cap. The stick would get a root, fill and cap.

Ok I guess I knew one pass wasn't gonna work I just didn't want to do multiple passes. Now just to decide mig or stick. My problem with stick is the whip and pause with the 6011, I'm just not very good at it.

SoCalSmoker I know kam would stick it...but if I had to chose I would mig it...I guess the easy way to see what you prefer is do one side with stick and one with mig Wink

I need to get better at stick so I'll probably stick weld it. But in the meantime I should stop thinking about welding it and actually cut the plate. I've also got a couple orders for santa maria grills that I need to get out of the way so I can work on my stuff.

Desertpits sorry it took so long for a reply. I'm in antelope Valley not far from you. I'd love to meet up sometime there's not many people around here into bbq. Smoking is new to me I've been doing Santa Maria style grilling for years.
