Been smoking several several years but have never been in a competition. This summer, our community held a bbq competition so I decided to enter.

I pulled up early in the morning, but most if the opposition had been there all night. They all had fancy tents, table clothes and really fancy new smokers.

As I unloaded my 20 yr old Brinkman (bought used) and unhooked my ho-made reverse flow, they all kind of made fun of me so I kind of just nodded at them.

As I sat There with my plain wood table and bottled beer,
I just used my knowledge that I've learned on my own and what I've learned on this site and I WON IT ALL!

The big problem--I opened my mouth and told the organizers they really weren't running it right (no classes, divisions, etc.) Guess what--I'm on the committee next year!

Just goes to show you that it's the cook and not the cooker.

It doesn't matter if it is a $150 Hondo from academy or a $35k rig, you have to know your pit...Competition BBq is about who is the best cook. Seasonings =10% and cooking it right is the other %90. Congrats on your win. BTW the first rule of competition bbq don't change nuthin if you win...

I had the same thing happen a few years ago. They put me and my ho-made smoker that I have maybe $200.00 in next to a brand new Old Hickory. Spanked their butts and won it all? LOL
