He has always been very helpful . A wealth of knowledge & has even posted pics for me before. Those that complain about him , probably complain about everything.

As someone who has administrated forums for 15 years now, I find Chris' management of the site to be fair, even-handed, and he keeps the riff-raff to a minimum. Really top notch. I fully support Chris' moderation of the site, with one unsurprising exception: the 650px image size.

It's obvious even to Ray Charles (and he's dead) that Garry is never going to fix the site. He's just stringing us along and cashing the checks. Requiring people to scale their images to 650px is driving away potential posters from the site and for what? To make a few pennies more advertising revenue? 650px is too frickin small these days. I've got a 24" 1080p monitor and 650x650px is barely 1/3 the width of my screen:

Also let's bust the myth that images over 650px wide cover the ads. They don't! You can have images up to 1280px wide and still not disrupt the advertisements (yes I just tested it here and this is an actual screenshot as I briefly violated the rule):

That shows the ads on both sides with no problem whatsoever.

If Garry wants the 650px rule enforced, he's more than welcome to upgrade the forum to something modern that works with mobile phones (where over 50% of internet users are now). Heck if he wants I will give him a ONE LINE code change that will auto-scale images to a reasonable size of 1024x1024. Until Garry takes some interest in TSR, I'd like Chris to let this stupid rule fall by the wayside. It doesn't help him or us, plus it's costing us new members who don't stick around, and less activity by veteran members. That's a far bigger cost than a few pennies.

Man it would be awesome if Gary would take Feldon30 up on his offer . This is the best source of info on BBQ around . It would only get better if it was easier to post pics . This is not a knock on Soezzy , he doesnt control that .

In the few years that I've been hanging around this place Feldon has offered many times to help with upgrades and programming. It has pretty much fallen on deaf ears. I agree with Feldon that Garry isn't going to do anything. It's too easy not to.

The last time Garry chimed in he made this comment...

That's like telling us if we don't like the smell of dog crap then we should go visit the waste treatment plant.

Anyway, back on topic... I've been reserving my comment about Chris. It seems that most of what's been said has been well said and I don't need to repeat it. Chris has been doing what's been required of him. I got no problem with that. He's an excellent moderator from my view point.

THE perfect response in gary's mind....He IS a self professed socialist. He DOES go back and deletes his political reply / rants on FB, but not before I have had the displeasure of reading them for myself...You see, it could be soo much worse, so we are BLESSED by his generosity, so long as it doesnt hit HIS wallet.......Too bad he cant blame FOX news for this!

SoEzzy does a fabulous job.

Agree with Feldon on the picture size, though. Think how much less SoEezy would have to moderate if not for that rule. Still though, this is an awesome forum...the best bbq forum on the net IMO.

If it really is as simple as a line of code to allow auto scaling of images, it would make SoEzzy's job much, much easier...

Please get it to happen!

Overall, he does a very good job.

Could tone it down a bit with the "!!!!" when a large picture is posted. I was called out when an old thread resurfaced. It had large pictures since it was a thread from before the pixel-size limitation was announced. Still didn't stop me from being chastised. Very Happy

Sometimes he's awake when old pictures and threads get brought back from before 01/01/11, sometimes he's not as awake as he could be, and raps a knuckle first, then finds out it's an older post later! Embarassed

Yep, it's TRUE! Since I'm so active in Soshul Meedeeuhh, I've formed a group called 'The Great Chicken Wing Conspiracy'. The meetings are on the 6th Thursday of every 13th month, on the 2nd full waning moon in partial eclipse of the sun after midnight Wink Laughing There are no dues (BUT - They ARE due on the first ending of each month!) and no members. Clothing optional. See y'all at the next meeting! Laughing Laughing

I sent him an PM once. It was about the crappy email response system. It sat in the outbox for a verrrry long time. I grew a 4 foot beard waiting on a reply that never came. I have since shaved and moved on with my life. Cool

Subject: Smoke Ring Forum and large images
I would like to volunteer to help add a small plugin to the forum software that runs the Smoke Ring so that its members (most of whom are not computer savvy) can post images without disrupting the right advertising column or having to mess with image resizing software/settings/etc.

Kindest Regards,

Morgan

He didn't even bother to respond.

By the way if you are wondering about that one-line code change, it's this:
Code:
span.postbody img { max-width: 1024px; max-height: 1024px; }

I just tested it here (by injecting CSS) with several different values of 300px, 200px, 650px, etc. and it all works. With the code above, all images larger than 1024px would be automatically scaled. But don't worry, the 2-3 people who still read TSR in three years time will still be talking about this crap while nothing changes.

Chris does a great and thankless job. If you can't abide by the rules of the site maybe you should go somewhere else. It's not really difficult. If I don't like the way a site is run I move on. Personally, I think this is one of the best run food forums out there. Smile

That's exactly what's happening. People have moved on to chit like Facebook and other forums that actually work on a cell phone and don't require people to jump through hoops to post photos. When I joined this site, there was a whole page of new replies every few days. Now I can go a month and not see that many posts. Traffic to this site is a tiny fraction of what it was when I joined. A great site left to die.

I haven't (yet) joined Facebook but I concur on the decline of postings seen here, and the decline in frequency of my own posts here.

It is depressing.

I'm really looking forward to March 12. I don't think we'll have another opportunity like that with the site left as it currently is.
