We are putting together a community Pro-Am BBq festival for next year. We have a great venue, with tons of parking, electrical, grass, room for beer tent, vendors, car show, etc. We want to attract as many teams as possible so we want to treat them right. Other than a respectable amount of winnings ($7500 - $8500) what would really make the teams want to come to our 1st annual event? One suggestion is to cook dinner for the teams the first night. Looking for lots of suggestions.

Yes, a dinner for the teams on the night before the contest is a good idea. Also make sure your entry fee is in line with other contests offering the same prize package - these days, everyone is looking for about the same cost/benefit ratio. Most cookers don't care about the other things going on - I've had promoters think that if they book a well-known band they'll attract cookers - no, most cookers just want to cook! Now, their spouses and/or children like some other activities going on - you have to admit, a BBQ contest isn't exactly a thrill a minute - so it's always a plus if there's something interesting for them.

I like when they offer extra categories to enter. I will cook dessert, beans, chef's choice, chili, fajitas, dutch oven or anything else offered.

Money will attract the teams. You put the money out there they will come. The first year we had our contest we offered 5000 dollars and attracted about 20 teams total. The second year we offered 15,000 and had to turn teams away due to lack of space. We had 100 plus teams in year two and created the largest bbq contest in our state. Pkerchef

It looks like this topic has been around awhile and it might not matter now. But I think one thing that can help is the way the payout is worked up.

I used to race cars andthe guys up front won all the money and the guys in the middle and back never got any real pay. It cost them just as much to compete as the guys up front. And no one wanted to come and watch a car race with just the front three racing.

So I say work out the pay back to about 10th place, in each meat. Getting $25 -$50 will make you feel alot better about being there than getting nothing.

Getting a few big name teams will not make an event go over as well as 15-20 lesser name teams.

Don't forget the port-a-potties . Have plenty of "facilities" if you will. Pkerchef

We have an ongoing survey asking what the teams find important.

this is going to sound weird but having access to real bathrooms is a huge plus, not such a big deal to me but to the wife and kids it can either make or brake her wanting to go to a contest again. i also agree with paying out and giving a plaque down to 10th in each catagory
