|
I have been wanting to build a smaller cooker for Debbie and myself so we can travel further out without bringing Bahama Mama. The cooker will be a 24" x 55" .375 wall cooker.
It will have two doors and no warmer but will have an awning. The firebox is 5/16" plate, the trailer will be made from an old boat trailer I acquired a few months ago. I have been sitting on this project for months but being tugged in a lot of directions will most likely yield another long build so have patience with me please.
12/26/14. Lets build a firebox.
My son works for blasting company and one of their clients donated my end caps and firebox plates for me, another company donated the pipe. I owe them a brisket or two.
I started putting the pieces together.
Placing the pieces corner to corner requires stops to hold the last two pieces.
The pieces were not perfectly flat so I earmarked one for my door and worked on it with the big hammer before welding it up.
Day one complete, more welding tomorrow.
12/27/14
I finished welding out the firebox and cut out the door, yes I used a cut off wheel. I am low on Acetylene and have to make some cuts today on another project. That is a magnet of who knows how many lbs. of pull. I have learned to not let it hit anything flat or it requires exhausting man hours to release it.
A pic of my burn through.
Here is a pic of the trailer. I ordered a new 3500 lb. axle for it which should be ready in a couple of weeks. This project will consist of mostly used or old steel I have at my shop. I am not looking for pretty just a cooker that works.
Behind the trailer you can see the cooker against my fence.
Thank y'all for looking.
More pics to come as I make progress. _________________ Always remember slow and steady wins the race.

Right on, another k.a.m. build to watch. Fun stuff! This should be like playing with a toy after the Bahama Mama and the Smokin' Aces builds. _________________ Backyarder

Is the area over the tongue going to be a dancing deck? _________________ Here's a change Robert.

Thank you Mike. She will be a bit smaller but i am kinda feeling it today. My heavy fab days are far and few between and a couple years off is wearing on me.
Thank You Chris. No dance floor but maybe a balance beam unless I trim the tongue.
Thank You Flyingj, I am not sure how steady I will be, I have a comp. season fixing to fire up.
Thank You 4xAggie. This cooker will most likely be pretty straight forward. I am just needing a smaller comp trailer, I will need a few comfort creatures though so we will see.
12/28/14
Today I was met with 40° and 100% rain. This is not an ideal temp for a CoonAss to work in. I did get my intakes cut out for the firebox door.
Since my door is going to be on the back I decided on horizontal slides. I needed at least 32 Sq. in. of intake so I went with three 2.25" x 6" tall openings, this gives me 40 Sq. in.
Closed.
Open.

So, seriously, it took you 2 days to weld up the firebox What are you going to tell me, that its like 5/16 material and you had to make like 4 or 5 passes per seam
Its a good start so far. You can tell we both have some builds going, the phone lines seem to be lit up a little more than usual. Looking forward to seeing this one come to life brother _________________ X2 Finished Build

Its looking good Kevin. Just hope you have a small crane to lift that firebox.... I can understand what you mean about wearing a person down....here in Kansas its been a little to cold to heat the shop and work for awhile. so its going to hurt for awhile when i do get back in the shop. One thing i was able to do was put up a portable garage to keep my cookers out of the weather. Im looking forward to follow your build...You all have a great New Year may it brings New hope and New dreams |

What he said
Your build threads are always entertaining, and educational too!
Lucky for me you started with the firebox. My first build is in progress, and my next step is to build the firebox. Trying to decide how to build the door and the intake has my head spinning. Since your new cooker and mine are almost the same size, I will be watching your firebox build very close, mayhaps using it as step by step instructions _________________ Mike |

Thanx Kevin. I will be watching very close. I think I will use round intake holes with a k.a.m. sawtooth damper like roscoe1960's rather than the slide type you cut. My door will be on the end. I'll try not to hijack this thread with questions (if I haven't already!) if I have any more I'll start a new post.
I look forward to following this build, I'm sure it will be very entertaining _________________ Mike |

Kevin looks good,I did the same thing after I had big red for a while,I made the smaller pit to do the same thing. Sometimes you need the big pit and sometimes you don't.
Happy new years to you both.
I will be moving back to KC in Feb. found a house finally after 3 years of looking

I'm kind of liking Chris 's dance floor Idea, since I've seen Debbie in action!
