I post this in another topic but I thought I would try here also.I am building a whole hog rotisserie. What would be the proper height for the spit to be from the coals? This is my first rotisserie and I don't know anyone who has one. From the looks of the tape measure, my guess would be around 20 inches. But before I go cutting and welding I would like yalls opinion. Thanks Joe

I'm no expert, but the one I built was 10" - 13" clearance from the heat source. That is based on a 80lb. pig. I believe the distance from the spit rod to the grate is 18" without the pig. I usually put the coals on both sides of the porker rather then underneath. I may be doing this all wrong but I cooked 5 this way and never had an issue and no flare ups.

My spit rod sits at about 36" from the ground. It cooks really good at this height, but if I had to do over, I would make it at about 28"-30". I normally cook 100-125lb pigs when I do a roast. I don't have any problems with flare ups at all.
