|
I have asked all of my local butchers and even the boys at the big box stores if they can order me a tri-tip. Many have tried and all have failed I even had one guy call me and said it wod be here in a day and when I arrived to pick it up the invoice on his order said unavailable. Whats up with this cut of meat. I am starting to get a bit annoyed. Is this cut a regional market only. I am seeing more commercial restaurants adversting this cut. Are they buying it all?
I may just go on a Lobster binge for awhile. Local price here is $2.50/lb .. cheaper than burger _________________ Lang 60 |

Can't find tri-tip, but lobster's actually cheaper than tips...
"I may just go on a lobster binge for awhile" ???
You got some danged hi-quality level of problems there !!!
You can try calling it bottom sirloin whole roast & see if they come up with the goods....
Or ask if they can get ball tip roast, not a bad replacement _________________ Have Fun Playin' with Yer Food !!!

Mainely Smoka, good luck, they seem as rare as hens teeth around the northeast.
My brother bought one for me a while ago, his butcher only had one, he paid around $9 a lb.
It tasted great, but at those prices I'd stick with lobster rolls.
Lobster down here is on sale for $5 a lb. lately. |

I FINALLY was able to get a Tri-Tip here (Georgia) at $6/lb ON SALE . I had been asking every 'butcher' around here for a couple of years. I kept getting that 'you have three heads' look. The local Publix had some at $6/lb, so I bought a couple and cooked them to 135 deg, rubbed with BigRon's ITH, like a lot of people on here suggested. They were good, but not $6/lb good. I hear most people (on the left coast) get them for around $3/lb. That would make them much better IMO _________________ The Matt Ryan of LIARS! (#2)

I have not yet found a butcher in the chain supermarkets in my area that even know what a tri tip is.I might have to find a good old country butcher and see if he knows what a tri tip is.....just a cut of meat that you never see around here. _________________ Horizon Offset (Marshall RD Special)

This is Ray's ( Hell Fire Grill ) pictorial essay from a bit ago....
http://www.thesmokering.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=58780&highlight=tri+tip+tutorial
This video that I added on shows exactly where it's cut
from.....
"Found a hindquarter cutting video that adds more clarity ~~~>

Maybe will help people trying to find the cut where it's scarce
or the cutters don't know what you're talking about...."
It'a a very versatile & flavorful cut, so I hope this helps folks locate it in their area..... _________________ Have Fun Playin' with Yer Food !!!

I can't get a Tri Tip either. And I have to special order an unmolested brisket. Neither of which is cheap. I guess the rumor about BBQ being made from the "cheap" cuts of meat is a rumor. I'd love to smoke more than butts but can't afford much else at the moment. _________________ AD1 (AW) Ret

The great thing about tri-tip here in MA is that a lot of people have never heard of it. I just need to keep checking on it at my local supermarket. I wait until it gets close to the "sell by" date and the butcher puts a "$5 off" sticker on it. _________________ Pitt's & Spitt's U2436 |

I, too, have noticed that meats tend to tenderize and gain flavor, exponentially, as prices get lower. Odd, isn't it? _________________ Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit.

If you can find a place that sells Brazilian beef, that cut goes under the name Picanha. The Irish sell that cut, too. |
