Hey all, I just came across quite a few racks that look to be out of a refrigerator or freezer and would probably fit my beast with a little modification.

Are these safe to use in a smoker? Or is there anything I can do to make them safe?

I'm not real good at identifying metal, but they don't really look like chrome, more of a dull silver luster. Can I use these for anything, like a box for coals or something?

thanks, Bbob.

Bbob, in cases like this pics are worth a thousand words. They may be galvanized.

Will see if this works...

It did look like some rust on one but it just buffed off. I just dropped some 50% nitric acid on them and nothing happened, but compared to a rack similar size that I know is stainless, these are definitely magnetic.

I read about cadmium poisoning from old refer shelves on a bbq. Don't want to risk it unless you all know otherwise.[/IMG]

Could they be made from aluminized steel?

bbob, they do not appear to be galvanized by the pics. You could put a torch to them to see if they fizzle blue grey smoke but I doubt they will. In my opinion your safe for cooking grates.

Some other searching has led me to thinking these are probably plated with silver cadmium. Evidently was pretty common for refer racks. Some other websites have actually mentioned poisioning or death from this.

Unless anyone has any other info, think I'm going to steer clear of these.
