I just got an e-mail back from a local winery owner. He said when they trim the vines around the first of the year, I can come get as much as I want! I figure I'll snag a garbage bag full. Does anyone have any experience with grape vines? Should I season them?

They are IMHO about the best to use. Age them about a year. Cut them into small rounds and they are simply the best. You can buy them from Chigger Creek in Missouri.

If the winery will sell you the old aging barrels, the wood is spectacular for smoking chicken with. My wife and I make 2 trips a year to the Napa Valley and come home with 2 or 3 Cabernet barrels. We rent a wood chipper and grind 'em up!
The wood has basically been infused w/ red wine and it gives a killer flavor to smoked wings. BBQ's Galore was selling staves of these and that is how I got the idea.
It will take up an entire weekend, but it is well worth it!
