The Smoke Ring team will be competing for $125,000 in prize money in the USA BBQ Championship at the Orleans Casino in Las Vegas on May 21-22. Our friend Steve Farrin from the I Smell Smoke team will be cooking with us. If you're in Vegas stop by and say hi!

We had a great time in Vegas even though we didn't win any of the big bucks. It was a very well organized and well run event. Our friends Steve and Charlie from the I Smell Smoke team came out and cooked with us. It was great spending time with old friends from our New England days. We also got to hang out with our friends from Puerto Rico, Mike Compton, President of the Caribbean BBQ Association and the BBQ Freaks competition team. The trip was sponsored by Rums of Puerto Rico. While the BBQ Freaks were cooking, Mike was conducting rum tasting classes with samples of fine Puerto Rican rums. Congrats to the BBQ Freaks for their 18th place call in brisket.

The awards ceremony was the longest I've experienced. They announced top 50 in each category and top 25 overall. We finished 59th in chicken, 24th in ribs, 40th in pork, 6th in brisket and 17th overall out of 95 teams. We didn't feel too bad considering the caliber of the competition at this event. It's interesting sitting through the top 50 at the awards. You go from "please don't call my name yet" to "please call my name!".

We met Mike Hays, allsmokenofire, and his teammate Smoke on the Horizon competing as Team Enoserv. Seems like Mike changes his team name at every contest. Very Happy

We had a special guest drop by

I posted some more pictures here:
