Well after seeing a few built i decided I wanted to build a new small cooker for the smaller sized cooks, appetizers, etc so the build started finding a 15 gallon steel drum. Finally after some searching found one at a Jiffy lube and after asking nice they gave me the drum for free. I didn't take any pics of the drum before but it looked like a yellow Pennzoil bottle. I loaded it with dry scrap wood from one of my other projects, bored a hole at the bottom for the air intake and burned the barrel for 4 hours with a electric blower blowing air into the intake to raise the temp. After it cooled i primed it with high temp white paint and it got 3 coats of that.
Drum burned out.
and primed white second coat.
once that was done its time to mock everything up to make her fit perfect, first the air intake was teflon taped and snugged together.
unlike some i decided to go with a adjustable ball valve for air intake.
I cannibalized some parts from my weber smokey joe and used the legs to get the smoker off the ground a bit.
Then i put together the charcoal basket and divider to increase the burn time.
Full mock up with colors for a visual reference.
Time to disassemble and the first coat of paint goes on. I used a 1200 degree paint to coat the whole cooker.
Then i scuffed and painted the old black weber lid to change the color to green
Cooker and lid in place
Masked off for the logo
Logo painted
and that is where i had to stop for the night. Will add black outline paint and a hand painted Canes name to the bottom of the logo tomorrow but had to put it together just to see how she looks.
I will update after i finish and then its time to warm her up and season the inside. _________________ Why is it the least qualified person is always the first hired, and the first promoted?

Man that thing really looks great. I'm sorry about the team choice but the UDS is nicely done! _________________ Jesse Gabbard

Looks great! I gotta ask, why did you teflon tape the threads? It's not heatproof and I doubt leakage would be much of a problem anyway. _________________ Pat

I'm jealous,,,,except for the team!
Nice work,,,I'm going to attempt to paint my UDS this weekend, and have been debating on whether or not to do a Husker theme or not. This may have inspired me in the right direction! Thanks! |

I will readily admit this cooker was almost totally different till i found an auto parts store that had multiple colors of 1200 degree paint. otherwise it was going to be black just like my other one. _________________ Why is it the least qualified person is always the first hired, and the first promoted?

Mind if I ask why your intake is near or above your exhaust? Seems to you may end up with air flow going the wrong way.
Otherwise, looks great! Here's mine:
