Went to my local grocer a few days ago and saw a German homemade style desert called a Kuchen. I bought the peach variety. We have had this for desert a few times this week and i thought.... What the heck is a "Kuchen" although very good i felt that Google could be a friend and find me a recipe.
After visiting the desert makers website and a little research at... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuchen
I found that its a cake like desert. Sweet dough with pie filling and a simple white icing. This is the definition i ran with...
A pie-like pastry, with a thick, "cakey" crust and an apple-pie like filling, often with sweet white icing on the top.
This has a "yum yum" factor that must be tried. So here is the recipe with pics to follow.
GERMAN KUCHEN
2 c. flour
1 c. butter
Pinch of salt
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 can pie filling (cherry, peach, apple, plum or blueberry. I used apple this time)
3 well-beaten eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1/3 c. chopped nuts (optional: i didn't have any nuts)
In a large bowl cream sugar and butter. Then add well-beaten eggs and vanilla. Add flour and salt. Save 1 cup of dough for topping. Spread dough in 9 x 13 inch greased pan, i used butter flavored Pam. Once the dough is spread evenly as can be expected, spread pie filling on dough. Top with 1 cup of dough; drop by spoonfuls. Sprinkle with nuts if used. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes.
In hind site i think 35 minutes would have been too doughy and 40 would have dried it out a little too much. I used a glass 9x13 cake pan and took it out the oven at 38 minutes knowing the glass stays warm quite a while. Turned out great, a sweet slightly doughy cake like crust with a hint of vanilla flavor. The white icing is just powdered sugar with a little milk, easy on the milk or it will be too runny.
Thanks for checking it out...

Jeff, that looks great. Good stuff! We've got some locals that sell it through an indy grocer and can be found at several of the colony markets.
Has been designated as the "official" dessert of South Dakota. _________________ I was taught to respect my elders. It's just getting harder to find them.

LMAO, don't worry Jeff I ain't goin' there.
My grandma used to make it, only with gooseberries. Homemade ice cream over the top and .........words cannot explain how good it was. Sundays after church, guess where I was at?
Looks good, marked your recipe and gonna cook it this weekend.
Thanks Jeff for the recipe and the memories. _________________ Gunny 3073/4044/8411

Most of those memories involves a sweet little old lady called "Grandma".
And well let`s face it, the recipes of today never seem to turn out as good as we remember. _________________ Go Big Red! |
