im building my first UDS and im trying to get
some feedback on coal basket size. My first
thought was bigger and wider would work
best (more versatle). would 15'' diameter x
6'' tall get me through the longest of cooks without
refueling Question Or would a wider basket catch more
grease and cook more evenly Question

My basket ended up being too big at 18" x 9" (chracoal grate from Weber 22.5" grill).

To explain, with the ash pan being welded to the basket, and of course wider than the basket itself, I can no longer have anything protruding into drum. Important things, like shelf bolts, prevent the removal of the basket.
See my solutions here: http://www.thesmokering.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32207&highlight=

At a full load, I've had over 40 hours cook time...with enough left over for an estimated 8 hrs.

My basket holds 729 cu in, yours would hold 337 cu in or almost exactly half, so theoretically you could get 20 hours easy on 15" x 6" and still be able to remove it easily.

If I were to do it over again, I'd do it your size.

My basket is 14" across and 12" deep. I have done a 24 hour burn and still had about 1/3 of my charcoal remaining. Cool Cool Cool
