Back in my fish monger days, this was a staple at old South Avenue Seafood. We used to sell tons of it, and we won more "Best Cole Slaw" awards than I can count. We even had folks travelling from Connecticut down to Jersey just for our slaw...

And the best part is, this recipe is a PERFECT example of "simpler is better" - it couldn't be easier to make.

--1 small- to medium-sized cabbage
--2-3 good sized carrots
--1 cup white vinegar
--1 cup sugar
--1 cup mayonnaise
--celery seed to taste

Shred the cabbage and carrots and mix all ingredients in a large bowl. Mix well. The cabbage will give up some water, but if the slaw seems to "dry" add equal parts sugar/white vinegar until you get the consistency you like. Cover, refrigerate and let sit for at least an hour, preferably 2-3 hours, to let the flavors blend.

(My personal favorite is to put this slaw right onto a fresh flounder sandwich: rye bread, fried flounder, tartar sauce, 1 slice yellow American cheese, a squeeze of lemon and a heaping spoonful of slaw.

Enjoy!

I make coleslaw several times a week to add to a chicken or beef dinner. Will like to try your recipe but without the celery. We don't have celery around here.
How many servings does your recipe make?

Sardy, I tried your cole slaw recipe and it was really good. The only thing I left out was the celery. Thanks for sharing it.

This is the same recipe I grew up with. The celery seed is what really makes this stand out. Pick some up and try it out, you will taste the difference!

Thanks! Glad you all liked it. SmoknCamo, you beat me to it... Celery SEED, not celery, and it's an essential ingredient... you'll find it in your spice isle... try it, you'll never go back!

Just happened acrossed this recipe, looks a lot like the recipe my mother would make when she was alive. You got to have the celery seed in it, that for sure.
I'm going to try this recipe, I'm sure it's going to be great.

Same recipe I use but like bauerb I put some purple cabbage in. I get lots of compliments on the color as well as taste. I also put some green onions in mine, chopped fine.
