After years of cooking on store bought New Braunfels (vertical and horizontal offset) I decided we were ready for a custom pit and contracted with Lone Star to fabricate a standard 24 X 48 (1/4") with a few custom details
Extra thermometers, an extra 1/2" coupling on the end for temp sensors, lifting points for use with my front end loader
I moved the bottom of the frame 6" outside the pit envelope for stability, pneumatic tires for rolling on gravel, and a 2" trailer hitch for pulling with my lawn tractor
Standard two tray slide outs, stainless service tray
The firebox inlet vent tolerance was so tight you could barely see sunlight through the openings
Exhaust stack closures were also very tight
Firebox weld detail
Firebox outlet deflector, tray and tuning plates support
There were other "little" details (important to me anyway). Lone Star responded promptly to each email/phone call, on time and certainly at a fair price. My thanks to Tom, Bubba and Tyler for a build that I'm sure I will enjoy for many years to come.
Giving Bubba and T their well deserved 15 minutes of fame

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, they build a SWEET cooker for the money!
Good idea on the base enlargement, one of those critters topples over and it WILL take the FE loader to lift it back up.
How long until we see the first burn?

Hey Michael (CT) thanks for the kind words. I showed this thread to the boys in the shop and they got a pretty big kick out of it. And, once again, thanks for choosing us to build your pit. If you're around this weekend, stop out to the Humble Rodeo and BBQ Cookoff. My wife and I are cooking and you can help out with the quality control |

Of course everyone's invited----reminds me of the joke about Texans willing to drive six hours for a bad meal!
Porterhouse and ribeyes done with mesquite at high temps are one of our favorites so I kept the firebox to pit chamber ratio substantial; all the inlets/vents are large also---I figure I can always throttle back for low and slow.
I did a low burn last weekend and got up to my elbows in Crisco to season it. We're stocked up with lump and chunks and the first burn is this weekend. Ah yes, the anticipation of the first date..............
Thanks All!
PS--Thanks for the invite Tom. I edited the post to give the boys their due; I hope they don't have any outstanding warrants _________________ Salt, pepper, mesquite!
