Pursuant to this thread, and Jarhead's response:

http://www.thesmokering.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=340922#340922

What do you guys think about using a poll for judging throwdowns?

Maybe I should have made this a poll... Embarassed

I like it! But I thought there were some technical limitations to doing this . . . ????

CC, thank you for the credit.
I hope it will fly, as I said before in the other post, it would be nice for all of us to have a voice in the winner of the td. Not totally, just a percentage of it. It would be easy and require very little effort. Close the poll at a preset time and give the judges the results. Oh well, bad idea, we can all see too. Embarassed

CrazyChef, I tried an off sight poll on one of our earlier throw downs but we opted not to go through with it because it had a lot of spam and I did not want our members subjected to it. Our poll here on the ring I believe only has five places so only five entrants. Multiple polls are no good because it will change the percentages for contestants. I have tried to get our poll numbers higher but it has not worked yet.

What about if the judges pick the top 5 to put in the poll?

The poll thing has been talked about.
Kevin talked to Either SoEzzy or Gary and there is a cap on the number of people can enter.I think like 10 people.(I believe thats what it was.)
The other way to do this is to by a poll posting site,Whith that comes SPAM.
The polls will only let Your computer vote once.Tracked By IP address.
Talk to One of the Big Boys(SoEzzy or Gary) and they will feel You in.

Its a great idea just might be tougher than it sounds.

Good Luck I will help where I can.

I think this would be the easiest of the polls, keep it local with no spam. Judges pic the top 5 and post for final with pics of the 5 entries.

Ok, just checked it, it won't let me vote again. Tried #20 twice to no avail.

Response on other thread!

http://www.thesmokering.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32089

If you need help working out the rules, (or the numbers how to), I'd be happy to help out in a neutral roll.

Jarhead, I liked the idea of keeping the poll in house and members only. The judges to pic the top five and set up polling is a great idea and with SoEzzy on the wagon to help iron out problems that might occur sounds like a great plan.

i feel so bad that i was not able to compete in the fattie throwdown, but i was out of town for the Christmas break, and i didn't get back home until the afternoon of the turn in deadline. good thing i was unable to officially enter (even though my 1st ever fattie was thrown in for judging) as it wouldn't have been fair for the rest of the contestants to go up against me!!! Razz I might have even been caught smoking a stoagie as well, lol!

that being said, when is our next throwdown??? i am itching to get the smoker fired back up, and will be doing so on saturday, even with the cold temps we are expecting here in north texas. any thoughts/suggestions/ideas to when the next throwdown will be? i am ready!!!!

happy new year ringers!!!!

I had been mulling this over even before this last TD. I came up with some ideas I'll toss out and hope i stay coherent.

Polling entrants: Separate thread for votes only. Comments and/or justification allowed only on valid voting post. Discourage "random" comments/posts from non-entrants. Would still need a final authority in case a tiebreaker is needed.

Judging panel: I'm pretty new, and don't know how long current system has been used or previous problems (if any). I was fortunate enough to be allowed to judge the the December Appetizer TD. I think it is important that a lead judge be specifically designated to receive all judges votes and keep the tally. No one was designated in Dec, we were just out there. Not bragging, but I took the initiative and contacted the judges and coordinated as best I could. We were able to come up with a definitive winner (in our opinions) through the PM function.

Public voting: Positive: Transparent, can be validated by all. Negative: Possibility of someone becoming "miffed" by anothers comments. I dislike P-ing contests.

Panel: Positive: Judges change from contest to contest, allowing wide range of opinions. Not unlike a comp (guidelines but subject to preferences). Judging done out of the limelight. If possible a "restricted" thread for Judges. PM is somewhat burdensome for coordinating.
Negative: Entrant might get PO'd at Panel, (but can't focus on an individual).

Just a few of my thoughts. I'm sure I have more but suffering from cerebral flatulence (brain f@rt). Smoker's just wanna have fun (and eat). I'll be ready for the next TD.
