Rolling right along through a couple rain showers holding steady, I'm a little concerned with the amount of smoke escaping under the lid but temps seem good.
I ended up taking a saws all and cut through the lip enough that I could bend it in a bit (about a 1/4 of the radius) because my lid and the rolled edge were the same.
Thanks for all the help!

That is a nice looking drum!
I wouldn't worry about the smoke leaking out the lid. It has to exhaust somewhere and if the temp isn't dropping or climbing you should be just fine!

Another great UDS is born!!! I wouldn't worry about the smoke around the lid as long as you can keep the temps! Where are the pics of the Q???

With the crappy weather we had today I did not want to take a chance on waisting some good grub. I had no idea how this thing was gonna work, just wanted to get her seasoned and mess with the temp control.
I ran it up to about 400* at first and then shut down 3 of the holes got it down to about 290* but could not get it any lower, did I just get too much coal going at once or is the lid causing me trouble?
I am gonna break her in good this weekend, three days of Q'in, racing and drinking!

Once you go that hot it takes a long time to back it down. Not bad for seasoniing or doing chicken and turkey to crisp the skin. IMO it was the temp. you racked it up to. Wink

Use the Minion Method, and as soon as you get the lit coals on the pile, get the lid on and close down all but one of your intakes, and try to sneak up to cooking temperature, instead of trying to back down to it...

Cheers

Great looking UDS! I'm with the others, all it needs is food! If you come up to the temp, and not try to come from hot down to the temp, I dont think you'll have any issues.
See great food on that pit this weekend!
