Ok, I fired up my new Backwoods Party to get her all seasoned up.
Everything went very well with no problems anywhere.

However, not sure what is going on with the theromstats.

I wanted to season it at 350 degrees for as many hours as I could get on a full load of charcoal and lump mix.

I got it up to 350 degrees on the door thermometer and she stayed steady at that for 8 hours.

However, I had to set the guru 384 degrees to get that.

Which temp gauge do I believe in, the door or the guru and do I need them calibrated?

Them factory door gauges are never accurate. I'm not sure what the guru is, but you can judge it (if it goes this low) by sticking it in a glass of chopped ice and water. If your Guru says 32, it's good.

I thought about trying that, I guess it would be a good thing to try at the very least.
Thanks

Your door thermometer probably won't read down to 32* so go the boiling water route for that one.

Thank, I got so much on my mind, I didn't think of that.

I just checked the GURU and it seem ok, with both probs in the ice water, the pit read 30-31* and the food prob read 32- 33*.

That's good in my books.

Tomorrow I'll take off the door thermometer and check all of them again in boiling water.

Maybe on an el cheapo, but on a Backwoods, yes sir they are correct. That is a Tel-Tru thermometer and money can't buy a better therm. Test it and see. Sometimes a bad one makes it out the door. BUt I will also say this...Guru's can get off point from time to time. I would go by the door therm if it tests out right in the boiling water.

Well all therometers checked out ok with the boiling water test, so it most be what Big Daddy Woo Woo said, the Guru gets off point.
Now that I see what's going on, it's not a big deal.
I just did a butt and things went just find and the butt was beautiful.

did you have the guru probe right next to the lid probe ???if not that can be a big deal ...we use the guru and the storker and we clip the grate witch is where you want to be making you temps work witch is where your meat is ..... the traeger probe in the right side of the lid is about 40 degs off from the stoker and guru at grate level

I was clipping the pit probe right on to the door temperater gauge probe.
You would think they would show the same temperater, but they don't.

The same thing happens if I clip the pit probe to the grate.
The GURU usually shows a temperater 7 to 10 degrees higher then what the pit temperater gauge on the door says.

I just need to figure out which gauge to really follow for temperater settings.

Go by the pit gauge on the door?
Or clip the GURU on the rack and go by that?
