Anyone use sand in a bigger model bws?

I'm thinking about giving this a try this weekend, mostly to make cleanup easier. Would like to hear from anyone with experience using sand.

Do you have a removable waterpan ? If not it seems to me getting the gicked up sand out of there could be a problem.

Nope, not a removable pan. But I would not let the drippings hit the sand. I would use HD foil for each cook and cover up the sand. Maybe even place a full hotel pan on the bottom shelf to catch the drippings.

Was thinking that I could play with the amount of sand in order to even out the temp of the bottom shelf with the top.

For sure it would be easier with a removable pan. On the other hand, the removable pan is real pain if you are using water. Try pulling a couple gallons of hot greasy water out of the BWS without spilling it on yourself!

I would think you're gonna have a difficult time keeping the grease from getting into the sand given the way the competitor is made. Give us a report when you try it.
