Posted: Jan 29 2006 Post subject: Smoked burgers & Hot Dogs? |
|
|
I tried it last year, with raw seasoned burgers & dogs, on a hot smoke (300-350 I think?). The dogs came out ok, but the burgers tasted a little weird & flabby , almost pork like. Now this is a huge smoker, so I don't think the taste was from the hot dogs.
I was thinking, what if I lightly grilled the burgers first, to mark them, then smoked them? Has anyone come up with an awesome smokeyburger?
Thanks- Cheffie |

Smoking a burger really makes it fall apart. I prefer to BBQ mine (350 degrees) for about a half an hour and then finish them off by grilling (+ 425). You get the best of both worlds. On occasion, I will also have my cast iron skillet over the fire and drop the burger in the skillet to sear it. _________________ https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaeloberry |

Yea, I have been wondering about this too. I have a large cast iron grill that I can sear on. I was thinking about searing burgers & then smoke/grilling them. I think the searing might help with the falling apart problem. Has anyone tried that? _________________ Carpe Diem! & break out the smoker & cooler while you're at it! |

I used to do smoked burgers in a Brinkman Sportsman water smoker. They weren't pretty, but they were damn good. Only took about 30 minutes to cook, but you know, those type of water smokers work a little different than the standard offset smoker. They are more chimeny than smoker, and the temperature can get pretty damn high there at the top.
Anyway, not saying you should run out and by a brinkman just to smoke up some burgers, but thought I'd let you know it's an option.

Dogs, okay. Burgers I like mine med/rare. You can't do this in the smoker, only over high heat. _________________ "BBQ may not be a religion in Texas, but the two institutions are closely associated."

Yeah, medium rare would be a challenge. Anyway, what we doin talking about "smoking burgers?" Smoking is for real meat....brisket, beef ribs, etc.... Things that weigh more than a couple oz's. _________________ Bubba's BBQ Shanghai, China

Ya'll have me cracking up!!! It's funny how one little typo totally changes the discussion of a subject. What a great sport you are Dinger.

I recognized it was a typo, and knew that the d was right next to the s so I knew what you were trying to say....
...but that one was just impossible to pass up! It was all meant in good fun! _________________ --Chris Baker

yeah, I finally figured the typo out. I read these things "my morning" so the second cup of coffee hadn't kicked in yet.
I still don't understand the Holiday Inn Express comment though _________________ Bubba's BBQ Shanghai, China

Sorry Kevin...it's a western humor thing I guess. A series of commercials about folks doing extraordinary things just because they slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night. _________________ Mike
