Using the search function!

When using the search function here are a few simple things you can try, that may help in your searches.

The words you use in your search string, in the Search for Keywords box, can also use the following to help tighten your search:

and = using “and” between two words allows both to be used in that one search.

not = using “not” between two words allows the first word to be searched for, but it excludes the use of the second or subsequent word after the “not”.

* = using “*” in a search as a wild card variable, allows you to use poorer spelling, e.g. If you know Jalapeno is spelled Jala but don't know the end you may use the “*” as Jala*, this will return words that start Jala but have different endings.

Here is a small example of a search, it is always easier to include things in a search than to exclude them, it is easier to think about, and easier to do as well.

e.g. 1)

If you want to look for abt (atomic buffalo turds) recipes, there are several levels you could search at.

Level 1) The simplest search would use the word abt as the criteria.

In the Search for Keywords box you would type: abt

This will bring you 200 + threads with the word abt in them.

Level 2) If you want to narrow it down to abt recipes.

In the Search for Keywords box you would type: abt and recipe

This will add the word recipe to the search string, and return only 40 + matches saving 80% of your reading.

Level 3) If you only want recipes with Jalapeno peppers in them.

In the Search for Keywords box you would type: abt and recipe and Jalapeno

This will add the word Jalapeno to the search string, and return only 5 + matches saving 88% of your reading, from the previous search.

As you can see, the tighter you define your search criteria, the less you have to read through to find the answer to your question.

e.g. 2)

You may also search by exclusion, though it is harder than by inclusion.

Level 1) The simplest search would use the word abt as its criteria.

In the Search for Keywords box you would type: abt

This will bring you 213 + threads with the word abt in them.

Level 2) If you want to narrow it down to abt and exclude the word cook

In the Search for Keywords box you would type: abt not cook

This will remove the word cook from the search string, and return only 201 + matches saving only 6% of your reading.

Level 3) If you want to narrow it down to abt and exclude the words cook and bacon

In the Search for Keywords box you would type: abt not cook not bacon

This will remove the word bacon from the search string, and return only 180 + matches saving only 10% of your reading, from the previous search.

Level 4) If you want to narrow it down to abt and exclude the words cook and bacon and cheese

In the Search for Keywords box you would type: abt not cook not bacon not cheese

This will remove the word cheese from the search string, and return only 156 + matches saving only 14% of your reading, from the previous search.

As you can see it is a much slower process to exclude things from a search than to include things into a search, in example 1) by the 3rd level we were down to only 5 answers to read, yet in example 2) by the 4th level we still have 156 threads to read through.

I have found that if you know you have read the post before and you need to find it again, you can list anyone who has a ranking of BBQ Pro as the author and it greatly reduces the number of returns. As long as they have responded to the post they will generally show up in the listing.
