Some folks use weed burners, some use a chimney and about 16 briqs or pieces of lump. Some place an empty coffee can in the mddle of their charcoal basket, fill around it, remove it and add lit coals. What you are after is a nice slow burn, how you achieve it is up to you, so go and experiment . As long as it works for your drum that's all that matters. _________________ Good barbecue can't be that hard, can it?

Old-CTM,
I light a chimney full of lump, let them get nice and hot and dump them into the center of the basket. I leave enough room in the center for the coals from the chimney. |

this is a silly question, but how do you get the ash out ?
and if you have to add more fuel do you have to take
out both grates and dump or is there a trick to this ??? _________________ a dime is a dollar with the taxes taken out |

From talking with UDS and BDS users, unless you are cooking longer than a brisket, then using the minion method, you wont need to refuel or to remove ash on most cooks.
Because the drums are pretty airtight, closing off the vents top and bottom, will shut it down so starting off with more charcoal for the cook isn't a problem, so fill up the ring and fire it up.
If your charcoal ring clogs up with the ash, and it may on a long cook, take out the grates and give the charcoal basket a shake to clear the ash, the put the grates back, it helps to have either an extra set of hands or a table nearby. _________________ Here's a change Robert.

Smoke!
For the most part, I wouldn't think to season them much a all.
If you want to do something with them then I'd spray the inside of a hot one with Pam and wipe it down, but you need to do this while it is still quite hot, or to do it just before you light it, what you don't want is to end u with the oil mixing with the ashes, this just makes a hell of a mess! _________________ Here's a change Robert.

As central as possible under the meat, in the most central part of the base. _________________ Here's a change Robert.

|
|
I know someone mentioned craigslist for the drum source and I've had no luck. Are there any type of businesses to look for that would use these type of drums? I would love to score a cheap food grade drum, but i don't know where to look. Also, Can theses be constructed without welding? Thanks |

I have been wanting to try my hand at making one of these for some time now!
Only two problems...
Can't find a drum, and couldn't buy it any ways... being a college student with a family that consists of 2 daughters a wife, 2 cats, and a golden retarded takes a toll on the extra green stuff that isn't eaten. I will continue to use my ECB and live vicariously through all of you who have one of these!

What MB said!
And how do you know whether a drum is food-safe? |
If the drum was used to contain a food product.... that would be golden. I think bakery's were mentioned earlier. Perhaps Famous Daves get Bush's baked beans by the Fiddy gallon drum.. OK Maybe not.
The Junkyard, or 'Recycling Center' as they are now called might have them, OR they might be able to tell you who has a history of bringing in Drums. I work for a place with such a history. The stuff that was in them is not exactly food safe... {Some of you would cry if you saw how many drums we cut the tops off with a beastly 50lb can opener, crush and haul to the recycling center.}
A Brand New Drum would be choice. A metal supply place might be able to order one in, or indeed roll you something out of similar or thicker sheet. Another place that might have new barrels is Safe-t-clean, or your local equivalent. They handle hazardous waste and whatnot... so obviously you want a brand new barrel from them. Northern tool, or grainger might have something as well. _________________ Traeger 075 "Big Tex"

Jason I found mine through a guy on craigslist. I have also bought them to use for burn barrels and such in the past from local home brew beer supply stores. They get bulk malt in them. _________________ "if you cant cook it in bacon grease it ain't worth eating"
