Sorry for the newbie question. I am going to use my Cimarron for the first time this weekend with some Pork Butts. I read in the archives that someone gave Kingsford Charcoal a good review. Is it worth while to try lump? I know it burns hotter and cleaner. Any advice? _________________ Brinkmann Cimarron |

Rob, I have the same rig. I've always used lump in mine. There's a lot less, almost none, fly ash to contend with to get on your pork.
The Cimarron will also burn smaller logs, like 5 inches long, maybe 2 inches diameter or so. I bought some hickory, and I just cut and split the firewood chunks down to that size. I use a chimney full of lump for a base, then feed the wood.
Did you get a firebox grate lifted off the bottom a little more? The wire grate that came with mine was extremely poor.
Best of luck to you. Remember, there's always some sort of learning experience with a new pit.

Lump, no briquettes becuase of the binders, glues, and actaul coal in the mix.
Now low quality lump can be worse than briquettes sometimes,, Watch out for south american origin lump (roayl oak outsources some of their lump)
Lump will also burn hotter by over 250 degrees too, again that depends on the base wood used.
I had some bad Cowboy brand lump that made the food taste like perfume in a light strange way. |

Lump all the way. I hate the taste of bricket. The lump charcoal has a great flavor on the grill.. _________________ Lang 84 delux long neck chargrill.
