I took the doors completly off then strapped them. No need to heat them I just used clamps and tacked them in place with my MIG before I welding them out. Worked for me.

scbbq i used 1/8" x 1- 1/2" worked fine in my ap. plug welding is nice. I welded mine all the way around in small stitch welding to prevent warping.
