I just scrapped off the old gasket and then used self tapping screws on the flat part of the tadpole gasket.
i was thinking i would have to get some flat steel, the screws would be much easier though ...

Sounds like you have an air leak in there somewhere. I would bet it is on the gasket of the firebox.
I close my exhaust about 1/2 way when cooking at 225, but all the way open when going 250+.

i wish i would have thought of "losing" my thermapen so i had to order a new backlit one to replace it, for food safety sake of course LOL
