As mentioned, just fabricate them out of strips of metal.
Using bolts to hold the grates and the bowl would accomplish the same thing.

Weber Smokey Joe lid and grates should fit.

I'm also planning on making a 16 gal UDS in the near future. I already have the parts from an old Smokey Joe which I can use.

I would design the smoker around a heavy duty cargo trailer. Most usually have the hitch point at the rear axle level rather than at the seat post.

Nice tutorial and very nice end product!
Most of what's illustrated can also be applied to those who don't weld. The basic idea is laid out for easy following.

Another option is to turn the drum over and cut open that end. Your dome lid should fit on that end.

Just so you know, a short stemmed thermo installed on the side of the drum will read approx 50F less than the middle of the grate. A ...

How about using a single 1.5" diameter extension and ball valve? The valve will cost a bit more but I like the idea of a single large vent verses 3 or 4 little ones and not having to deal with c ...

I only got half the burn time and not as hot using Stubb's natural briquettes as compared to Kingsford blue charcoal in my UDS. Has anyone else found this to be the case?

I kinda like the drill thru the bolt idea as my temp probe is skinnier than the ID of the electrical nut/bolt nipple set, although that is also a very nice set up.

Man, that's a perfect match! I wished mine did that.
I'm just starting my UDS build as well and had to grind down the drum for the lid to fit.
