It was explained to me that the benefit of the 1/2" box is less heat loss, which equals less wood to burn. If you don't think it is worth it for your needs don't do it.

I would look at trying to find some hardwood (oak or hickory) for cooking. I use a mix of lump and wood. I seem to get some pretty good burn times out of my fuel supply.

In January a local chain (Fiesta) was running spares for .99 per pound. Needless to say I bought ribs quite a few times. Lately they are running about 1.79 to 1.99 per pound.
