Inverting the main chamber charcoal grate is key. I hooked mine on the second to the top hook on the side lifter handles.

By the way, charcoal baskets are available through CharGriller website. If you are handy take a look and then make your own. I just bought two from them - I am not a metalworker!

Thanks for the ideas I will give it a try. Good to have the old unit around in case we need to smoke for a large crowd - but generally it will be used for grilling.
