I recently acquired one just like that, wooden handles and all. I made a charcoal basket and it will hold 275° as long as there's fire. Congrats on the cooker!

Agree with all the above, I have a Cabela's 1.2 horse #8 and it will grind about as fast as I can stuff meat in it. Also consider a foot pedal, makes things a little easier.

What's the perks of a pellet grill?

You're cooking with wood (pellets)
Since they are mechanical, things can and do go wrong but for the most part you turn it on, set your temp, and walk away.

I have the full range of WSMs, a Mini, 14.5", 18.5" & 22.5" and agree with the others that you can't go wrong with them. The WSM is, I believe, the most often recommended smoker.

The best and your price range are not compatible IMO.
If you can make $1000-$1200 work, then you have several options, still not the best, but respectable.
