Yes, that's exactly what happened. The airflow goes (almost) directly from the heat source to the vent. This is why I prefer reverse flow cookers.

I've done it, and it's absolutely fantastic! ANY good meatloaf recipe will work just fine. One thing I like to do on occasion is add some good salsa to the mix. Gives it a nice Tex-Mex flavor.
